VA hospitals are full of men and women who have made huge sacrifices for our country.

We like to think that veterans come home and simply blend back into society.

The reality is that many war veterans spend the rest of their lives trying to recover from their wounds. Some say the loneliness is worse than the physical disability.

Today Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) known as the "signature injury" of this war will soon be as well known as the term Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Improvised Explosive Devices (IED), aka "bombs", planted all over and hidden on the ground can cause mild TBI without the victim realizing it, simply by being close to an exploding one.

It has been estimated that as many as 65% of Vets returning from Iraq/Afghanistan suffer from TBI.

The number of Iraq vets diagnosed with mental-health issues triples during their first six months at home.

VA hospitals are full of young baby-faced victims of IEDs-- some with missing limbs or incredible anger issues.

Others are so physically hurt they let out blood curdling screams as the physical therapist works on them.

Veterans in wheel chairs stare off into space while answering questions in monotone.

These military men and women made huge sacrifices to defend our country.

This new generation of war veterans will spend the rest of their lives trying to recover from their wounds.

Veterans relearning to smile, to use prosthetic limbs and to even communicate at all may feel that the sacrifices made are forgotten once they come home from active duty.

It is our desire to help these deserving men and women so that no veteran, from any war, ever feels forgotten. Would you help us do that?

YOUR HELP IS DESPERATELY NEEDED!

Oklahoma American Veterans News, (OAVN) , is committed to making a positive difference in the lives of Veterans by providing ongoing support. OAVN, a 501(c) (4) corporation provides for a Veterans "greatest need".  At any time that need might be a bus ticket to the hospital, a meal for an outpatient who doesn't have the funds or personal care items for someone in the VA hospital. Currently, we at OAVN are trying to raise funds for:

  • Pre-Paid Phone cards- a small $5.00 card would allow patients to talk with a family member, once in awhile.
  • Everyday personal care items for Vets entering the hospital - Some come in with nothing-- not even a toothbrush. Others are there for so long they begin to run out of basic items they brought with them.  Care Items Needed
  • Fruit- After fasting since the night before, many Vets have a long wait before they get in to have their lab work done. A piece of fruit, as they leave the clinic, can help combat weakness.  We would like to be able to provide bananas and gladly welcome any help with this project.

OTHER WAYS TO HELP

Most of us want to help these deserving men and women but simply don't have the time to go purchase and then drop off items.   Oklahoma American Veterans News now has a PayPal account and will purchase items for the kits with your donation. Any amount is most appreciated.

Vietnam Vet Lionicio (Leo) Perez, now an employee for the Veterans Administration, sees first hand the the lasting affect the treatment Vietnam Vets received when returning home, has had on many soldiers.

Desiring to do something to show his appreciation and gratitude to his fellow comrades Perez wrote  "Welcome Home Soldier" for "Suavecito Sound Band". The band will debut his  song in concert at Centennial Park (1028 E 6th St) in Tulsa, OK on Saturday evening  July 18th, 2009. (6 p.m.-9 p.m.)

The free concert to "Welcome Home" the men and women of our armed forces will include a special tribute to the Vietnam Veteran.

Momentum is building as the mayors office and others are getting involved  to show their support. (More volunteers are needed.)
