UPDATE!
What began as FEEDING HUNGRY LITTLE TUMMIES in February 2010 has grown.

Several people who have shared expired coupons for the project have begun to send their unexpired coupons asking that we use them, in whatever way we can, to help Veterans and others here in the U.S.

Here is a sampling of some of the things we have been able to do so far with their unexpired coupons:

  • VA hospital- personal care items such as razors, toothpaste, mouthwash, etc.
  • buying food for the DAV food baskets.  (Recently, in just one day the DAV had 12 Vets needing help come in.)
  • restaurant coupons to a home-bound Veteran and his wife who were having to order food from restaurants.
  • microwaveable meals to keep on hand for a home-bound Vet.
  • Boost and Ensure coupons - Sr. Citizens Center
  • items delivered to the family of a Veteran when he passed away.
  • cat and dog food coupons help Vets feed their animal or if none need them they can be donated to the Humane Society.
  • purchase items to give to a few families going through hard times.
  • helped provide a meal to Haven House volunteers (Haven House is in Muskogee, where female relatives of hospitalized Veterans can stay)
  • coupons are available for Veterans groups to help them with an event
  • food and personal items for those staying at Haven House
  • items for Blue Star Mothers boxes
  • VA Clinic - During the year we hand out something as a small gesture to say "thank you" to our Vets.  Coupons allow us to buy more so we can thank more Vets.
  • teaching how to use coupons to buy groceries for a better price and showing them how to use coupons to help others.
Thank you to everyone who is helping by being a part of this!

Oklahoma American Veterans News - Where your donation goes.OKLAHOMA AMERICAN VETERANS NEWS (OAVN) STRETCHES  EVERY DOLLAR
In the fall of 2009, OAVN made the decision to contact past donors by mail,
saving on phone and office expenses. However, the numerous requests for help
that we are receiving has made it necessary that we use the phone to alert donors
of this ever increasing need.

PROJECTS - 2010

FEEDING HUNGRY LITTLE TUMMIES-The wife of a military officer, who taught school while stationed overseas, kept a pantry to feed American soldiers children, who often came to school hungry.  Although struggling to get by, while they are living overseas these families can't get food stamps to help make ends meet. Here is one way that we can all help, even if our own money is tight. Expired Coupon Project

HAVEN HOUSE- Located in Muskogee, OK Haven House provides a place for
female relatives of veterans who have been admitted to the Jack C. Montgomery
Hospital
to stay, at no charge. OAVN has purchased the paint and welcomes
volunteers
who wish to help paint and do a few other things around the house.
Ever wish you knew how to do more things around your house. Come on and learn
as you go....it will build your confidence!

Phase II will be to help stock the pantry and collect a few items needed to make this a comfortable place for guests. We will be adding a list of items and you might just have that extra twin size bed skirt we need. You may wish to bookmark this site.

BANANAS AND RAISINS FOR VETERANS  (ongoing project) The night before lab work, Veterans may be required to "fast", which can leave them shaky and weak the next day. A small box of raisins or a banana, given to them when leaving the clinic can help until they can have a meal. When possible, OAVN likes to provide bananas and raisins at the Ernest Childers Veterans Clinic. OAVN volunteers will pass these out when they have the funds. Last year volunteers were able to do this five days during the year.

SOCKS- a much requested item by hospitalized Veterans are socks. We are currently
trying to locate a supplier who can help us by providing a discount.

DOT'S CHRISTMAS STORE which starts in November each year provides hospitalized Veterans, who cannot go shopping themselves, with Christmas gifts to give loved ones. This is a really fun project because no one participating is asked to go out and purchase gifts, yet many people are surprised to find they can help with this one.

“People who are out of work are volunteering to stay connected to their communities
and to hone their job skills,”……
http://www.parade.com

"Volunteer work" is a way to gain experience and On Job Training (OJT) in areas
where I might otherwise never had the opportunity to do so. What I didn't expect
was how it has allowed me to network with people from all walks of life. Their fancy title
is left  back at the office when we are in blue jeans with our sleeves rolled up, working
side by side to complete a project or taking a quick sandwich break.

Most of the time I had no idea who they were nor the influence they had to open
doors for those who work hard to do a good job on a volunteer project....and
I
wouldn’t have had access to them without meeting them through volunteering.
