HONORING VETERANS - SALUTE TO VETERANS WEEK

February 8-14, 2010 Salute to Veterans Week was a success again this year.
Oklahoma American Veterans News (OAVN) worked with the offices of both
Mayor Dewey Bartlett Jr and Oklahoma Governor Brad Henry to obtain
proclamations for Salute to Veterans week. OAVN Volunteers at the Ernest
Childers Veterans Outpatient Clinic in Tulsa passed out cookies, bananas,
raisins, crackers, along with information about numerous discounts offered
by local businesses.  A third in a series of keepsake cards by Peter Enns was
presented to Veterans.

Businesses offering discounts to Veterans are invited to contact OAVN
about OAVN distributing their information to Veterans.

VALENTINE GIFTS FOR HAVEN HOUSE-

Dot's Christmas Store and Oklahoma American Veterans News provided
gifts and chocolates for the ladies staying at Haven House. (Haven House
is a place for female relatives of hospitalized Veterans, to stay, at no charge.)

December 2009:

DOT'S CHRISTMAS STORE

Imagine being in the hospital with no Christmas gifts to give to your family or others
who might drop by with a gift for you. An already stressful situation becomes more
depressing.

Now, imagine how you would feel if someone made sure you had Christmas gifts to
give to your loved ones.

Dot's Christmas Store allowed Veterans the opportunity to shop, from their bed
for a gift to give to a loved one.

OAVN collected enough gifts to provide EVERY Veteran in the Jack C. Montgomery
Hospital a Christmas gift to give a loved one and then returned a second time to
make sure that all new arrivals also had a gift to give.

Veterans at Claremore Veterans Center and the Ernest Childers Veterans Outpatient
Clinic were given the opportunity to Christmas shop for loved ones, from gifts provided
by Dot's Christmas Store.

Thank you letter from VA

February 2009 Salute to Hospitalized Veterans Week,  OAVN honored

Veterans at the Ernest Childers Outpatient Clinic, in Tulsa, OK.

During 2009 OAVN volunteers passed out fruit at the Ernest Childers VA Clinic.

December 2008 OAVN donated a commercial popcorn machine, cases of popcorn,
along with coffee and creamer, for the break room.

Christmas season 2008 OAVN provided fruit (apples, oranges and bananas) and
handed out a keepsake Christmas card. The laminated card, commissioned by OAVN,
was written especially for the Veterans by Canadian-born poet and spoken word artist
Peter Enns. Nationally recognized by many distinguished Americans, including five
United States Presidents, this gifted Tulsan, who became a United States Citizen,
in 2005, has been referred to as
the "The Norman Rockwell of Poetry".

After reading the keepsake card more than one veteran returned
to the clinic in order to pick up a card to share with a fellow Vet.

The Carillon Bell Tower at the Ft. Gibson cemetery was dedicated November 16, 1985 with Congressman Mike Synar guest speaker.  John Paul Hammerschmidt was the guest speaker when the Carillon Bell Tower in Ft. Smith AR was dedicated, on November 11, 1986.

The Carillon Bell Tower is an effort to show homage and thanks to these fellow comrades who helped preserve freedom and provided a future for those who remain.

OAVN has been recognized for both their integrity and the ability to raise funds quickly for a project. The Carillon Tower project took Oklahoma American Veterans News (OAVN) only nine months after the fundraising efforts began, with a matching grant from AmVets.

Oklahoma American Veterans News has been reaching out to more than just our Veterans, helping individuals and non-profit organizations for 20 years.
